My Erasmus adventure in Nancy! Live abroad and learn from other cultures
I knew even before I started my degree that I wanted to go on Erasmus, I though about different destinations. All of them where different, from UK to Sweden, but in the end I decided to go to France, a country really close to Spain, but yet so different.
First I had to improve, or better said learn, French before my departure, so I got to it and through the language I discovered a totally different culture. Those months of preparing to leave my hometown, for more than one month, for the first time in my life, passed by and the day came.
My parents drove me to the airport and after two planes I landed in Nancy, my home for the following 6 months. At first that afternoon of January I asked to myself what was I doing at a CROUS dorm close to the university. But as the days passed by I found out about ESN and met other students that where on Erasmus like me. If you don´t know anyone in your city of destination I recommend you to use FlatFit App. It allows you to contact your future flatmates before arriving to your next adventure. So in less than two weeks I was having dinner with most diverse group of people I could have had imagined, people from Germany, Belgium, Hungary and many other countries. All of them with different backgrounds but destiny had put us all together in that town of Alsace-Lorraine.
Not only did we party but I also had the chance to take part in different trips to places I would had only dreamed of, but they proved to be even better than anything I pictured. Like a weekend trip to Belgium where beer, chocolate, waffles and fries were my diet and I got the chance to discover that magical city, which I hope to return to.
Day after day building memories my mind was opening up every time more to different cultures and points of view, even if it was still weird to me to start the party at 10pm when in Spain starts at midnight.
In the end daring to go to another country was one of the best things I could have done; not only because of the academic experience but because of the people I had the chance to get to know.
Creating memories and having the chance to be with people that have different cultural backgrounds is one of the best things that you can do in your life. Right now and after other international experiences I know that living in other places was the best thing I could have done, and hope to be able to continue discovering more cultures in the future.
